Getting Started
An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM card built into your device. Instead of inserting a physical SIM card, you download a carrier profile by scanning a QR code. It works exactly like a regular SIM - connecting you to mobile networks for data, calls, and texts - but without the plastic card.
Most smartphones released after 2019 support eSIM, including:
- iPhone: XS, XR, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 series and SE (2nd & 3rd gen)
- Samsung: Galaxy S20 and newer, Z Flip/Fold series, A54/A55 5G
- Google: Pixel 3 and all newer models
- Huawei: P40, P50, P60, Mate 40/50 series
- Others: Xiaomi 13+, OnePlus 12+, Motorola Razr
Your device must also be carrier unlocked and not jailbroken/rooted.
No. Most modern phones support dual SIM - your physical SIM and eSIM work simultaneously. You keep your physical SIM for calls and texts while using the eSIM for mobile data. There's no need to swap or remove anything.
Roambit eSIM plans are data-only plans. They provide mobile internet for browsing, apps, messaging (WhatsApp, iMessage, Telegram), video calls (Zoom, FaceTime), and all other internet-based services.
For regular phone calls and SMS, continue using your primary SIM card or use VoIP apps like WhatsApp, Skype, or FaceTime over your eSIM data connection.
We recommend installing your eSIM before your trip while connected to Wi-Fi. Here's why:
- You need an internet connection to download the eSIM profile
- Installing at home avoids stress at the airport
- Your data plan doesn't start until the eSIM first connects to a network at your destination
So there's no downside to installing early - your data validity only begins when you actually use it abroad.
eSIM Installation
After purchasing your plan, you'll receive a QR code via email and in your account dashboard. To install:
- Connect to Wi-Fi
- Go to your phone's SIM/cellular settings
- Select Add eSIM or Add Cellular Plan
- Scan the QR code
- Wait for the profile to download
- Done!
The entire process takes about 2-3 minutes. See our device-specific guides for detailed steps.
No, each eSIM profile can only be installed on one device at a time. The QR code and activation code are single-use. If you need to move the eSIM to a different device, contact Roambit Support - we can issue a new QR code for the same plan.
If QR scanning fails, try these steps:
- Clean your camera lens and ensure good lighting
- Hold your phone 6-8 inches from the QR code
- Display the QR code on a different screen (computer or tablet)
- Increase brightness on the screen showing the QR code
If scanning still fails, use manual entry - your purchase email includes an SM-DP+ Address and Activation Code that you can type in directly.
Yes! If the QR code is displayed on the same device you want to install it on, you have several options:
- Open the QR code on another screen (computer, tablet, friend's phone)
- Use manual entry - Enter the SM-DP+ Address and Activation Code from your email
- Screenshot method (iOS 17+) - Screenshot the QR code, then long-press the QR code in Photos to add the eSIM
Troubleshooting
This is usually a quick fix. Try these steps in order:
- Enable Data Roaming - Settings → Cellular/SIMs → your eSIM → Data Roaming ON
- Toggle Airplane Mode - Turn it ON, wait 10 seconds, turn it OFF
- Set eSIM as data line - Make sure your Roambit eSIM is selected for mobile data
- Restart your phone - Power off, wait 30 seconds, power on
- Manual network selection - Try selecting a network operator manually
Data roaming being disabled is the #1 cause of this issue.
Signal bars without internet usually means a data configuration issue:
- Check your data line - Ensure Roambit eSIM is set as your data SIM (not your home SIM)
- Enable data roaming - Must be ON for international eSIM plans
- Check APN settings - Verify the APN matches what Roambit provided
- Switch network mode - Try changing from 5G to LTE/4G
- Toggle Airplane Mode - Quick on/off cycle
- Disable Wi-Fi - Turn off Wi-Fi to force cellular data
If none of these work, try resetting your network settings.
Yes, but proceed with caution:
- Most eSIM profiles are single-use - Once deleted, you may need a new QR code
- Contact support first before deleting, to confirm your eSIM can be reinstalled
- Your data isn't lost - It's linked to your account, not the device
To reinstall after deletion, log in to your Roambit account → My eSIMs → select the plan → Reinstall/Get New QR Code.
Several factors can affect speed:
- Network congestion - Peak hours are slower, especially in cities
- Network mode - Try switching between 5G and LTE
- Location - Urban areas have better speeds than rural
- Background apps - Close apps consuming data in the background
- Carrier selection - Try manually selecting a different carrier
If speeds are consistently under 1 Mbps, run a speed test and contact support with the results.
Software updates (iOS/Android) occasionally cause eSIM issues. Here's what to do:
- Restart your device - A simple restart often fixes post-update issues
- Check eSIM status - Go to Settings → SIM/Cellular and verify your eSIM is still listed and enabled
- Toggle the eSIM - Turn the eSIM line off and on again
- Reset network settings - This clears cached network configurations
- Contact support - If the eSIM profile disappeared, we can issue a replacement
Data Plans & Coverage
Your plan's validity period starts when the eSIM first connects to a mobile network at your destination - not when you purchase or install it.
This means you can buy and install your eSIM days or even weeks before your trip without wasting any days. The clock only starts ticking when you actually use it abroad.
When your data allowance is fully used:
- Your mobile data connection will stop working
- You'll receive a notification from Roambit
- You won't be charged extra - there are no overage fees
- Your primary SIM for calls/texts is not affected
Options when data runs out:
- Top up your current plan with additional data
- Purchase a new plan for your destination
- Connect to Wi-Fi until you top up
It depends on your plan type:
- Country-specific plans - Only work in the designated country
- Regional plans - Work across all countries in the region (e.g., Europe = 39 countries)
- Global plans - Work in 100+ countries worldwide
For regional and global plans, your eSIM automatically connects to local partner networks as you cross borders. No switching or reconfiguration needed.
